From LA to L.A. : a Southerner's journey west

Never Cut Corners

on October 7, 2012

This week was full of lots of ups and downs – figuratively and literally. We started the week off with a bang by meeting our friends Shelley, Justin, Steven and Lauren in Burbank to see Shelley and Steven’s movie, Pitch Perfect. It was such a blast and really funny so if y’all haven’t seen it, get to the movies! Shelley and Steven did a great job and it was so fun seeing them on the big screen!

Thursday was Josh’s birthday and I decided to take him mountain biking in Big Bear Lake! We were told about a moderate trail that seemed like fun so we hopped on our bikes and got to it. About an hour into the ride it became apparent that California’s idea of moderate and my idea of moderate are quite different. It was definitely meant for actual mountain bikers with actual gear that actually knew what they were doing, but we had fun anyway! Got a lot of great pictures, a crazy intense workout and in a few weeks I’ll have an awesome battle scar to mark the occasion. I completely wiped out on our way down the hill when I cut a corner a bit too fast. Josh even had to give me his shirt to wrap around my leg and we felt super hardcore and outdoorsy until we met up with a couple carrying shopping bags on the same trail just “taking a stroll.” Granted we were like half a mile from the end and they weren’t going very far, but still…

This is at the start of our ride on what we thought was a high point.

Here I am with my bike even higher up.

Getting a rock to take our picture!

Another great view from the top.

Still had a great day!

That night we met some friends at a restaurant in Beverly Hills called the Stinking Rose. It’s an Italian restaurant that’s garlic themed. Everything has garlic in it from their meatloaf to their martinis to their ice cream. Quite an experience! There was live music and they even serenaded Josh wearing garlic hats. We stayed the night in Culver City and spent the next morning at the beach and the afternoon in Hollywood for ANOTHER audition for Josh!! :-)

He got to wear a garlic hat, too!

Pretty good for 29 I’d say!

Unfortunately, we ended the day with a bit of bad news. The apartment that we put a security deposit down on is not really going as planned. There are problems with flooring, move-in dates and we feel a bit odd about the whole process right now. Seems like they’re just not following through and instead are trying to take the cheapest way out. We’re actually going to look at another place tomorrow just to keep our options open. It will all be resolved by Tuesday (I hope) so by the next post we’ll have an official move-in date and a new address! To pick ourselves up after hearing all that, we found a great little sushi place that has happy hour all day. Woohoo half-priced sushi and drinks!

We got to spend Saturday night with Jeff and Deb playing the creepy and fantastic board game Betrayal at House on the Hill. We also tried out a new milk shake with pumpkin and bourbon. Such a winning combination! I actually found it on Pinterest so if you’re interested, check out the recipe here.

That about wraps up our week. Josh has a few interviews with Apple over the next few days and may actually start temping at Jeff’s office. As for me, I’m still transcribing that Emeril Lagasse. Oh and this week his guests were from New York and Jersey. I can already tell I’ll have an accent by the end of this. BAM!

Two last little things:

  1. Josh has decided to start a 365 Project like I did in 2010. Just in case you don’t know what that is, he’ll be taking one picture a day and documenting what he did. It’ll all be uploaded to Facebook as he goes so y’all can keep up with us there, too. He’s sort of challenging himself to make his last year of his twenties adventurous!
  2. I started another DIY, baking, fitness, whatever blog. I’m a jack of all trades and a master of none and I’ve decided to share my brilliance with the world. It’s called The Dabbler Ramblings and you can find it here. This week’s entry will feature the recipe and process of making Josh’s Everything Fall birthday cake!

As always, thanks for the calls, texts and e-mails of support. We so appreciate the love coming from all over the country. :-) Until next week!
